El 24 de Mayo de 1822, con la victoria de los patriotas sobre las tropas realistas, se selló la independencia de las regiones que integraron la Real Audiencia de Quito durante los siglos coloniales y pasaron a formar parte del Distrito del Sur de la Gran Colombia y, ocho años más tarde, separados de ella, se constituyeron como la República del Ecuador.
Con la victoria del Pichincha, culminó el proceso de emancipación hispanoamericano, que tuvo su hito inicial en el movimiento autonomista de los patriotas quiteños el 10 de Agosto de 1809 y su sacrificio heroico en la matanza del 2 de Agosto, en 1810.
Sin embargo, la culminación de la independencia de España no produjo profundos cambios en el tejido social, en las relaciones de dominación y las exclusiones que se habían generado con las estructuras coloniales.
A los 188 años de la independencia, los retos mayores para el país son la lucha contra la pobreza y la desigualdad y por una sociedad que corrija la injusta distribución de la riqueza y ofrezca educación, salud y otros servicios públicos básicos para todos, sobre todo a quienes ahora no tienen acceso a ellos.
El cambio social y el progreso, como ha comprobado la experiencia de otras naciones, pasan por las construcción de una democracia y el imperio de la ley, la estabilidad política y el crecimiento económico. La celebración cívica debería ser memoria inspiradora de ese cambio, para impulsar amplios acuerdos políticos y sociales en torno a grandes objetivos del país.
